Last week saw the UK Observe UK Savings Week, which is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of saving.

It also serves to inform individuals about what they can do with their savings, such as the types of savings products and tools available, how much and when to do it, and the types of help and advice available.

Here at Danbro Financial Planning, we champion events that promote financial literacy such as this. We believe having a defined saving plan that’s personal to your goals and circumstances is crucial. After all, we’ve built a business around it!

With that in mind, here’s a few useful savings tips and resources we think you should know about.

Financial Know-How Now for Financial Confidence Later

As we discussed in our blog about financial planning for young people, one really important factor if you’re saving for later life is to start as early as you can.

The power of compound interest has the potential to make a dramatic difference to your pension pot. However, making the most of it isn’t just about putting as much in as possible, it’s more often about putting it in as soon as possible, and leaving it to grow as long as possible.

Put Your Savings to Work

It’s one thing to have savings, but another to ensure they’re working for you as hard as they can.

This can mean different things, but in general it involves:

  • Considering investing some savings if it’s suitable for your circumstances
  • Ensuring the savings accounts you’re using are tax-efficient (eg using ISAs)
  • Taking advantage of any government bonuses available, such as with Lifetime ISAs
  • Being aware of how interest rates and inflation can affect the buying power of your savings
  • Keeping an eye on the providers and accounts available to ensure you’re getting the best rates.
  • Establishing a clear plan to ensure the amount you’re saving will allow you to reach your goals

Having a financial adviser on your side can help navigate these questions and proactively get the most out of your savings.

Investments carry risk. The value of your investment (and any income from them) can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount you invested.

Key Principles to Prudent Saving

Here at Danbro Financial Planning we understand the importance of making informed investment decisions to secure a brighter financial future for you and your loved ones. In this article, we guide you through the key principles and strategies for successful long-term saving and investing, tailored to the unique needs of the next generation.

This includes how to set clear and time managed goals, looking at the long term picture, and top tips to empower your savings.

Getting Organised for Retirement

Whether you’re approaching retirement, or planning ahead, it pays to understand what you’ll need, what you have, and the steps you’ll need to take to achieve the retirement you strive for.

It’s essentially about getting your ducks in a row, and we’re here to help. In our February 2024 Newsletter, we explored the importance of financial planning and organisation for your retirement. Check it out here.

A pension cannot normally be accessed until your reach 55 (57 from 6th April 2028). Investments carry risk.

Savings for Peace of Mind

Many people like to have a reserve of savings as a rainy-day fund of sorts, to provide backup to themselves and their loved ones should circumstances unexpectedly change. This type of forward thinking can help bring peace of mind, however it’s not always possible to maintain this safety net. Therefore, it may be worth considering how insurance and protection products such as Critical Illness Cover, Income Protection, Home & Contents Insurance and more can also help ease the pressure of unforeseen circumstances.

We’ve written about the various types of Insurance & Protection plans available here.

Protection plans typically have no cash in value at any time and cover will cease at the end of term. If premiums stop, then cover will lapse.

We hope you find these resources helpful, and as ever, if you have any questions or would like to take your saving journey even further, please get in touch with Danbro Financial Planning. We’re here to help you craft and manage your perfect savings plan, providing you with proactive guidance and peace of mind.
